Welcome to the Chico High School Mathematics homepage. The staff of the
Math Department is committed to excellance in mathematics. It is our hope
that every student will leave Chico High with a better appreciation of the
beauty of mathematics and how it relates to their lives.
Our Staff includes:
- Competency Math
SEMESTER (9-12) Variable Credit. Prerequisite: Failure of CUSD math competency
test. Topics covered include place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication,
division, decimals, fractions, percent, and measurement. Each topic must
be passed with 80% proficiency to earn credit. May be repeated if less
than 5 credits earned.

- SC Math
YEAR (9-12) Variable Credit. Prerequisite: Designated limited English proficient
student. SC Math is an inovative new sourse designed for the student to
begin the development of the necessary skills to make mathematically informed
decision in realtion to their jobs, their government and their lives. Upon
completion of SC Math, a student will either take Algebra I or continue
in the integrated sequence.

- Algebra I, Algebra IA (begins midyear) and
Algebra IB (begins in September)
YEAR (9-12) Standard Credit. Meets UC/CSU entrance requirements. No prerequisite.
This course presents the beginning algebra essential for the study of mathematics
at the college level. Skill in solving linear and quadratic equation and
inequalities are developed. Other topics include simplifying and evaluating
exponential expressions and rational expressions, factoring, graphing and
working with radicals. May be repeated for credit with department approval

- Geometry
YEAR (9-12) Standard Credit. Meets UC/CSU entrance requirements. Prerequisite:
Algebra I. This course is designed for the college bound student. The major
topics concern the characteristics of such geometric concepts as lines,
angles, triangles, and circles. Importance is placed on understanding the
properties of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional figures, and the area and
volume of thses figures. Proficiency in thinking logically and drawing
reasonalbe and valid conclusion, given a hypotheses, is a primary goal.
May be taken concurrently with Algebra 2 with departmenal approval.

- Integrated Math
YEAR (9-12) Standard Credit. Honors and GATE course. Meets UC/CSU enterence
requirement. Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry; B grade or better, teacher
recommendation. Topics will include those normally convered in the course
of Algebra2, Trigonometry and Analytic Geometry. After completing this
course a student is prepared to enter first semester Calculus.

- Algebra 2
YEAR (9-12) Standard Credit. Meets US/CSU entrance requirments. Prerequisite:
Algebra I, Geometry, or successful completion of Algebra I and department
approval. This course provides a thorough review and extension of Algebra
I in the form of a mature mathematical development. Topics include properties
of real nimbers, polynomial equations, rationa equations, radical equations,
inequalities, coordinate geometry of the conic sections, logarithmic and
exponential equations, arithmetic and geometric series, combinations and
permutations, introduction to probability and trigonometry. This course
helps to from and excellent background for future courses in business,
science, and mathematics. May be taken concurrently with Geometry with
department permission.

- Trigonometry
SEMESTER (9-12) Standard Credit. Meets UC/CSU entrance requirements. Prerequisite:
Geometry, Algebra 2. Course is a prerequisite for Calculus in college.
Course develops circular and trigonometric functions of angles, formulas
relating them, and application in the science area. May be taken concurrently
with Algebra 2 by seniors.
Return to Staff List
- AP Calculus
YEAR (10-12) Standard Credit. Honors and GATE course. Meets UC/CSU entrance
requirement. Prerequisite: Trigonometry and Analytic Geometry or Integrated
Math. This course covers topics usually taught in first and second semester
college calculus. Topics include derivatives and applications of derivatives
the definite and indefinite integral and applications of the definite integral
and special methods of integration. The advanced placement examination
in claculus may be taken in the spring for college credit.
